Here are the promised pictures of flowers I saw in Texas. This are all from more or less the Galveston area, and I have no idea what any of them are, and whether they are native wild-flowers, or escaped garden plants. If any of you happen to know, please tell me.

This first photo isn't a wildflower at all. The palm tree outside the hotel was blooming, and I've seen been in the right place at the right time to ever see that before, so just thought it was pretty neat.

These next two pictures are flowers that were growing on roadsides and in the unmowed lawn area where I was working around La Marque. The orange flowers are tiny things, at most the size of my pinky fingernail, but quite bright and pretty. The daisy shaped flowers are about the size you'd see for a fancy garden daisy or gazania. The blue flower you can see in the background of both looked like some tiny variety of vetch.

This giant yellow thing was growing in big patches along the roadside, looking amazingly bright as I drove by.

Slightly less bright were these, which look halfway between a poppy and a wild rose:

And finally, on the road to my next site I drove past immense numbers of these last flowers. The color in real life is even a little brighter than in these photos- the sun was just starting to go down, and they had an amazing day-glo appearance. Some were nearly all red, and other more pinky/yellow.

I have a friend on LJ who grew up in Galveston and gardens. If you want to unprotect the post, I will ask her to look at the pictures.

The "slightly less bright" are desert roses.

I only know them because, while I was unemployed, I'd buy a stem or two every couple of weeks (they last a long time cut) at the farmer's market. If you went during the last hour, you could get two stems for the price of one because they didn't want to lug them back to home base.
